Buying a Cloud Forest to Protect Its Extraordinary Wildlife

Buying a Cloud Forest to Protect Its Extraordinary Wildlife

Some forests feel as though they belong to another time. High in the mountains surrounding Medellín, Colombia, cloud forests are places where mist drifts through ancient trees, rare plants flourish in the damp air, and elusive wildlife moves quietly beneath the canopy.

These forests take their name from the thick clouds that frequently envelop the mountain peaks. But their significance goes far beyond their atmospheric beauty. Here, the Andes meet the Caribbean plains and the wild Chocó-Darién rainforest, bringing together species and natural communities from three distinct ecosystems. The result is an extraordinary concentration of biodiversity, including many species found nowhere else. Five different species of wild cats roam this landscape, while ancient magnolia trees - members of a plant lineage dating back around 100 million years - connect the forest to a distant past.

Yet this remarkable ecosystem is under threat. Forest is being cleared to make way for cattle pasture, continuing a land-use practice introduced during colonial times. On the region’s steep slopes, cattle farming can be particularly inefficient, while the loss of trees and vegetation places additional pressure on an already precious natural environment.

Protecting this forest means giving it a future beyond agriculture. And that begins with securing the land itself.

The Mission: Protecting a Forest for Generations to Come

In Colombia, Fundación Magnolios is building a nature reserve from the ground up, with a long-term approach that combines land protection, natural regeneration and targeted conservation.

Since 2016, the foundation has expanded its reserve to 700 hectares, protecting land from being converted into cattle pasture and creating space for nature to recover.

Its approach has three key steps.

First, protect the land. Buying forest secures it for conservation, helping prevent further clearing and giving wildlife and native plants a safer place to thrive.

Second, let nature do what it does best. Cloud forests are wonderfully suited to natural regeneration. With abundant moisture and lush growing conditions, vegetation can recover quickly when the pressure of clearing is removed. Rather than trying to control every aspect of the process, the team allows the forest to reclaim its space wherever possible.

Third, give vulnerable species extra help. Some plants need more focused attention to ensure their survival. Among them are the ancient magnolias that inspired the foundation’s name. By collecting and propagating seeds from rare species, the team is helping give these remarkable trees a better chance of surviving into the future.

Now, the Planet Wild community has joined this effort, working alongside Ecosia to purchase an additional 53 hectares of forest. This land is now permanently protected and will be allowed to return to its natural state.

But protecting a forest involves more than drawing a boundary around it. The reserve also needs people on the ground to explore, monitor and safeguard its remarkable biodiversity.

That is why the project includes funding two and a half years of salaries for two rangers, along with specialized equipment and training. Their work will help the team venture deeper into the forest, protect vulnerable habitats and look after the extraordinary species that depend on them - from rare, ancient magnolias to the five elusive wild cat species that roam the landscape.

There is something powerful about protecting a place simply by giving it the chance to remain a forest. A purchased piece of land may seem like a small thing beside the scale of global deforestation, but it can become a refuge for countless forms of life. Its trees can grow, its wildlife can find shelter, and its natural processes can continue without being interrupted by clearing.

By securing these 53 hectares, the mission is helping protect more than a beautiful landscape. It is preserving a living connection between ecosystems, safeguarding a remarkable collection of species and allowing a forest with a history stretching back millions of years to keep writing its story.

Sometimes, one of the most meaningful things we can do for nature is to make sure a place remains wild.
