I am proud to be a born and bred South African! The animals, birds and landscapes of our country are part of every South African's DNA.
The music videos I have included here are related to animals and nature. This content is joyful, inspiring, and speaks to the heart of what it is to be a part of this beautiful country. These are the clips I watch whenever I need inspiration for my art, or if I need to lift my spirits.
Drakensberg Boys choir - Elephant Charge
The Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School is one of South Africa’s most treasured musical institutions, nurturing young voices that carry the power, rhythm, and spirit of our land.
In this clip, they perform “Elephant Charge” ('Elephant' is Indlovu in isiZulu) with a vibrant energy that leaps off the screen. From their traditional outfits and precise dance movements to the sheer joy and clarity of their voices, every note fills me with emotion and a deep connection to the wildlife that inspires my art. The blend of isiZulu and English lyrics captures the pulse of the South African landscape, reminding me of the majesty and strength of elephants, charging through both song and imagination.
Johnny Clegg - Great Heart
The late Johnny Clegg, who left us in 2019, was a true musical storyteller of South Africa.
In this performance of “Great Heart”, his voice and movements carry a vibrancy that transcends time. This song, like most of Johnny's music, blends isiZulu and English with effortless grace.
Watching him sing and dance, I feel the same pulse of life, strength, and wonder that inspires my wildlife art. Every note, every rhythm, is a celebration of connection, courage, and the wild beauty of our land.
Siki Jo An - The Click Song
Siki Jo-An's vibrant performance of "The Click Song" captures the essence of Xhosa tradition and storytelling. This traditional song, often performed at weddings, is believed to bring good fortune to newlyweds.
The title "Qongqothwane" translates to "knock-knock beetle," a name given to a local Darkling beetle, named for its distinctive tapping sound, which is said to guide lost children home.
In the song, the beetle is likened to a witchdoctor, symbolizing guidance and protection. Her energetic performance and melodic mastery evoke a deep emotional resonance, reminding me of the rich tapestry of South African music that continues to inspire my wildlife art.
